The overwhelming focus of this 2nd volume of “Physics of Lakes” is adequately expressed by its subtitle “Lakes as Oscillators”. It deals with barotropic and baroclinic waves in homogeneous and stratified lakes on the rotating Earth and comprises 12 chapters, starting with rotating shallow-water waves, demonstrating their classification into gravity and Rossby waves for homogeneous and stratified water bodies. This leads to gravity waves in bounded domains of constant depth, Kelvin, Poincaré and Sverdrup waves, reflection of such waves in gulfs and rectangles and their description in sealed basins as barotropic ‘inertial waves proper’. The particular application to gravity waves in circular and elliptical basins of constant depth leads to the description of Kelvin-type and Poincaré-type waves and their balanced description in basins of arbitrary geometry on the rotating Earth. Consideration of two-, three- and n-layer fluids with sharp interfaces give rise to the description of gravity waves of higher order baroclinicity with experimental corroboration in a laboratory flume and e.g. in Lake of Lugano, Lake Banyoles and Lake Biwa. Barotropic wave modes in Lake Onega with complex geometry show that data and computational output require careful interpretation. Moreover, a summer field campaign in Lake of Lugano and its two-layer modal analysis show that careful statistical analyses of the data are requested to match data with computational results. Three chapters are devoted to topographic Rossby waves. Conditions are outlined for which these waves are negligibly affected by baroclinicity. Three classes of these large period modes are identified: channel modes, so-called Ball modes and bay modes, often with periods which lie very close together. The last chapter deals with an entire class of Chrystal-type equations for barotropic waves in elongated basins which incorporate the effects of the rotation of the Earth.

This thesis describes a laboratory experimental study to investigate performance of a scale model of a sediment retention pond, with the aim of improving the understanding of the effect of physical design features on its hydraulic performance and sediment removal performance. The experiments were conducted using a 1:10 scale model of a field sediment retention pond. Several configurations of the model pond with different widths of inlet, design of outlet, and location, number and type of baffles were examined. All of the experiments were conducted at steady state condition with fixed flow rates. Tracer experiments, using Rhodamine WT tracer dye, formed the majority of the experiments, from which residence time distribution curves (RTDs) were obtained and analysed. In addition, the tracer dye was visually observed to identify the zones of short-circuiting. Sediment removal performance was evaluated for a number of pond configurations, by measuring water turbidity at the outlet. The turbidity was caused by addition of a representative sediment (silica flour) to the pond. Velocity fields were also measured for inspecting the effect of spatial velocity variations on sediment removal performance. In addition to physical modelling, a CFD technique was employed for numerical investigation of pond configurations with different length-to-width ratio and bank slopes. The results showed that reducing the width of the inlet (to 85% of pond’s width) to avoid the shallow water over the sloping side walls, and modifying the outlet to avoid disrupting the flow streamlines, both improved hydraulic performance. Installation of submerged solid baffles, and different types of porous baffles, further increased the pond’s hydraulic performance, albeit to different degrees. Sediment removal performance was also increased when baffles were incorporated. Comparison of hydraulic performance and sediment removal performance indicated a strong correlation between these two measures. In addition, the data collected from the tracer experiments were scrutinised, and a new index was developed for quantification of the hydraulic performance of ponds and wetlands. The results of CFD modelling showed that pond configurations with aspect ratio of 5:1 or larger, and (for a given aspect ratio) with a bank slope of 2:1, had higher hydraulic performances. This research is the first to extensively investigate details and locations of baffles for improving hydraulic performance of sediment retention ponds. It can provide useful information for improving the performance of ponds by altering their design. In addition, a new index was developed for ponds and wetlands, which can contribute to a more enhanced analysis of hydraulic performance in ponds and wetlands of different layouts and configurations.

Prophets of the Posthuman provides a fresh and original reading of fictional narratives that raise the question of what it means to be human in the face of rapidly developing bioenhancement technologies. Christina Bieber Lake argues that works by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Walker Percy, Flannery O'Connor, Toni Morrison, George Saunders, Marilynne Robinson, Raymond Carver, James Tiptree, Jr., and Margaret Atwood must be reevaluated in light of their contributions to larger ethical questions. Drawing on a wide range of sources in philosophical and theological ethics, Lake claims that these writers share a commitment to maintaining a category of personhood more meaningful than that allowed by utilitarian ethics. Prophets of the Posthuman insists that because technology can never ask whether we should do something that we have the power to do, literature must step into that role. Each of the chapters of this interdisciplinary study sets up a typical ethical scenario regarding human enhancement technology and then illustrates how a work of fiction uniquely speaks to that scenario, exposing a realm of human motivations that might otherwise be overlooked or simplified. Through the vision of the writers she discusses, Lake uncovers a deep critique of the ascendancy of personal autonomy as America’s most cherished value. This ascendancy, coupled with technology’s glamorous promises of happiness, helps to shape a utilitarian view of persons that makes responsible ethical behavior toward one another almost impossible. Prophets of the Posthuman charts the essential role that literature must play in the continuing conversation of what it means to be human in a posthuman world.

Since the beginning of commerce on the Great Lakes there has been a desire to build larger and more efficient ships. Beginning in the nineteenth century shipbuilders began to increase the size of their creations as new materials and construction techniques became available. This process of innovation would continue throughout the twentieth century as improvements to the shipping channels on the Great Lakes opened up new possibilities in ship design. These efforts culminated in 1972 with the commissioning of the first thousand-foot vessel to sail on the inland seas, the STEWART J. CORT. This ship set a new benchmark in the hauling of raw materials and would be followed by twelve more ships of her class which collectively revolutionized the US flagged shipping industry on the Great Lakes. These ships represent such a significant step forward in the evolution of the Great Lakes freighter that even today, nearly forty years after they began to enter service, they remain unsurpassed in size and carrying capacity. The story of this class of ships includes the earliest of the thousand-footers, the STEWART J. CORT and the PRESQUE ISLE, two unique vessels built incorporating highly innovative features many of which were not carried on in subsequent designs. This tale also includes vessels such as the JAMES R. BARKER and the BELLE RIVER which became patterns for the ships that followed them. In this volume, each of the thirteen thousand-foot ships is described to relate each of their unique operational histories along with the purposes for which they were built. Included are numerous never before published photographs, portraying these ships in both their previous and current operations.
