|Infra Eco Logi Urbanism: A Project for the Great Lakes Megaregion| is a single project monograph that assembles a multi-faceted investigation into, and design of, possible urban futures for the Great Lakes Megaregion, undertaken by |RVTR Research Vision Transformation Realization.| Network and assemblage-based analyses are coupled with regional history and with an agenda for an alternative geopolitical economy, which produces and is produced by the design of new urban infrastructures and architectures. The new book posits a manifesto for architecture at the scale of megaregions. A projected future development for the Great Lakes Megaregion of North America is the situational subject within which speculative design work, utilizing tools of urban analysis and formal intervention, aims to reconceptualize future boundaries, governance, politics, economies and public architecture. This work is based in the proposition that by investigating interdependent agents, material flows and policies, and by focusing on what has been considered the |back of house| activities of cities and their support systems infrastructures, logistics and ecologies designers can conceive new distributed urban architectures, within the center and the periphery, that have the potential to actively transform the future of cities, settlement patterns and metropolitan life. Both the form and content of the book allege an urban design practice that is not about a singular vision or a grand scheme, rather, proposed is an assemblage of reciprocal relations nested at micro and macro scales of both time and space. The text is illustrated with around 100 color and halftone images, visualizations and graphics. The book also features a prologue situating the historical development of the region around transportation by Robert Fishman, professor of architecture and urban and regional planning at Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and an epilogue by John McMorrough, associate professor of architecture at Taubman College, investigating possible future worlds, utopias, and the question of what if ? within the context of the specific project and more broadly the practice of design-research. RVTR RVTR is a design research practice with studios based in Toronto, Ontario and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Our work operates across scales to position design as an active agent in continually evolving ecologies. Our projects range from the visioning of the urban future of regional territories, to high performance building design, to prototype-based research in responsive envelope systems and to digitally crafted objects. These operational scales are tied together through a methodology that entails a systems based approach: one that assembles around each project a multiplicity of agents, forces and contexts and that actively leverages these multivalent and sometimes contradictory agents to drive new potentials for the work. In order to approach these complex issues, RVTR operates simultaneously as a professional architecture practice and as an academic and experimental research platform. Since our inception in 2007, the three directors Geoffrey Thun, Kathy Velikov and Colin Ripley have worked to blur boundaries between these two aspects of design practice. Our studio environments operate as experimental think tanks horizontally organized to engage the full breadth of our team s input in each facet of project development. Associates Mary O'Malley and Dan Mc Tavish bring specific expertise, deep focus and dedication to the execution of projects within the office. RVTR also regularly collaborates with broad multidisciplinary teams of academic, scientific and industry partners enabling a deep and informed approach to integrated design. RVTR has received numerous awards including a Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Award of Excellence for Innovation in The Practice of Architecture (2011), an R&D Award from Architecture Magazine (2010), the Professional Prix de Rome in Architecture from the Canada Council for the Arts (2009), the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers (2008). The work has been exhibited and widely published internationally. |
